TUSCALOOSA, AL – LaVorius McCruter, a Shelton State theatre student, will attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy to study with the Acting on Camera Conservatory on a $32,000 scholarship in New York City and Los Angeles.
The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) is a premier performing arts institution with campuses in New York City and Los Angeles, offering professional training in acting, musical theatre, dance, and more. McCruter will study at the Acting on Camera Conservatory, spending two years in New York City and one year in Los Angeles.
“I’m still in shock, disbelief,” McCruter said. “I’m looking forward to meeting different people from different sides of the world.”
McCruter started studying at Shelton in August 2023 for his associate arts degree. He began taking theatre classes in high school, and continued to take courses throughout his time at Shelton. McCruter took to the stage as Dewy Maples in “The Diviners” with Shelton State Fine Arts in April 2024.
“LaVorius is so eager to learn and grow as an artist,” said Theatre Tuscaloosa Executive Producer and Shelton State Theatre Educator Tina Turley. “I loved directing him in ‘The Diviner’ at Shelton and was thrilled to see him make huge discoveries and learn the craft of acting. He is an absolutely delightful and positive person and a joy with which to work.”
Shelton State Theatre Program Coordinator Molly Page had the opportunity to work with McCruter in preparation for his application to AMDA.
“I have only had the privilege to know LaVorius for a short time, but I have been so impressed with his enthusiasm for acting and his delightful spirit,” Page said. “He is so talented, and I can’t wait to see him succeed at whatever he puts his mind to.”
McCruter starts his journey with AMDA in June 2025. Shelton State Fine Arts and Theatre Tuscaloosa are excited to see him flourish in this new chapter.
