In Hazlehurst, Mississippi, three sisters gather to await news of their grandfather’s impending death. Lenny, the eldest, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles are hilariously highlighted by their cousin, Chick, and the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail.

Characters/Roles

  • Lenore (Lenny) MaGrath - The eldest of the MaGrath sisters. The play is set on her 30th birthday.  She is thoughtful, self-conscious, protective of her sisters, and concerned about her impending spinsterhood.

  • Meg MaGrath -  The middle MaGrath sister at 27.  She has returned from Hollywood to be with her sisters.  She had a nervous breakdown and lost her singing voice in Hollywood.

  • Becky (Babe) Botrelle - The youngest of the MaGrath sisters, at 24 yrs old. She is the central figure of the play. Babe is the most fragile of the sisters and thus most like their mother, who scandalously hanged herself and her cat years before the action of the play.

  • Chick Boyle -  is the 29 yr. old first cousin of the MaGraths.  She has yellow hair, shiny red lips, and a brassy disposition. She is ashamed of Babe’s alleged crime and voices her shame frequently and indiscriminately.

  • Doc Porter - the thirty-year-old former boyfriend of Meg.  Doc remains infatuated with Meg, even after his marriage to another woman and the birth of his two children.

  • Barnette Lloyd - Babe’s twenty-six-year-old lawyer. Barnette is a graduate of the Old Miss law school who returns to Hazlehurst to open his own firm. Barnette has a personal vendetta against Babe’s husband, formerly a state senator from Copiah County.
