Poster Distribution

Poster Distribution

We have a list of hundreds of businesses in Tuscaloosa that will proudly display our posters if only we can get them delivered. That's where volunteers come in!

To make it easy, we have divided our list of businesses into several geographical "zones." Volunteers adopt a zone on a per-show basis, pick up the posters at our ticket office during regular office hours, and take them to each business on the list. They also keep their eyes open for new businesses in their zone, and we regularly update our lists with the most up-to-date info based on volunteer feedback. When finished, volunteers send back a photo of the distribution list with their successful deliveries noted and return any extra posters to the ticket office. Upon completion of each zone, volunteers will be given an opportunity to reserve a complimentary seat at an upcoming performance.

Ushering

Ushering

Serving as an usher for one or more of our performances can be a very rewarding experience. Ushers serve as our ambassadors to our patrons - greeting people as they enter our theatre, taking tickets, distributing playbills, assisting patrons with finding their seats, and assisting at special events and receptions, etc.

We request that our ushers be willing to do the following:

  • Wear a white dress shirt, black slacks/skirt, and black dress shoes (Those who arrive out of uniform may be turned away.)

  • Arrive at least 1 hour before the performance that you'll be ushering

  • Work at intermission

  • Stay 15 minutes after the performance to assist with clean-up and preparation for the next performance

  • Have a pleasant and welcoming demeanor towards our patrons

  • Bring a can-do attitude and willingness to help

Those who usher get an opportunity to see the performance at no charge and get an insider's view of how Theatre Tuscaloosa works. A brief orientation is conducted by the House Manager prior to each performance, so no prior experience is required.

Working as Stage Crew

Working as Stage Crew

The Stage Crew is responsible for moving scenery, helping with costume changes, assisting with props, running spotlights, running the sound and light boards, prepping the stage before each performance and cleaning the stage after each performance, and more.

Serving as a member of the Stage Crew requires the following:

  • Commitment to being at every scheduled performance of the production which you're crewing - usually at least 90 minutes prior to each scheduled performance and at least 30 minutes after each performance ends.

  • Commitment to attending 3-5 technical and dress rehearsals

  • Wearing all-black at every rehearsal and performance that you attend

  • Having a positive, can-do attitude towards all crewing opportunities

  • Ability to follow directions quickly and accurately

  • Ability to communicate well with actors and other crew

Serving on Stage Crew does not necessarily require prior experience.  Our staff and experienced volunteers will help you learn what you need to successfully work backstage at our productions!

Set Construction, Props, and Painting

Set Construction, Props, and Painting

Every production that Theatre Tuscaloosa creates involves building a whole new set.

This process is very similar to working at a construction site.  We use power tools, hammers, nails, paint, and good old fashioned elbow grease.  If you are creative, energetic, and enjoy working with your hands, you'll love working in our scene shop.

Costume Construction and Maintenance

Costume Construction and Maintenance

Costumes don't grow on trees - they're designed, created, borrowed, rented, and maintained by our resident costumer.

She's one busy lady, and she could use your help.  She's particularly in need of those with experience in any sort of sewing or garment design, but she "can teach anyone to sew!"  Plus, there are many ways to help out in the costume shop including laundering and ironing clothing, repairing garments worn by actors during shows, assisting with wardrobe changes backstage, maintaining and taking stock of our extensive inventory, etc.

Ticket Office

Ticket Office

If you have a knack for answering the phone and working directly with the public, we would love to have your help in our ticket office. As a ticket office volunteer, you would get to sell tickets to our patrons, assist with archiving ads and articles about our shows, copying, filing, organizing, etc.

Serving as a ticket office volunteer requires the following:

  • Punctuality - you set your schedule, and we need you to follow it so we can make plans accordingly

  • An outgoing, friendly demeanor

  • Attention to detail

  • Willingness to dress professionally

  • Computer literacy

We are willing to train you on our online ticketing software and our internal policies.  If you're willing to learn, then working in the Ticket Office can be a very rewarding experience!

Publicity

Publicity

Getting the word out about our productions is an important task, and we could use your help.

From putting up posters and distributing flyers to speaking to clubs and organizations to working informational tables in public venues to conducting social media campaigns, there are many ways to help out with publicity!
